What is N.L.P. ?
It stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming.
Neuro refers to the brain and nervous system.
Linguistic literally means words. It relates to both external and internal dialogue. Other elements include voice tone and body language.
Programming describes how our behaviour is formed, produced and changed using the software of the brain.
The two people who originally came up with the concept of N.L.P., were Richard Bandler and John Grinder. There were a number of other people who were instrumental in the development of N.L.P: Milton Erickson, Gregory Bateson, Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Margaret Mead.
Many other people since the origination of N.L.P. have had more influence on how it has developed.
Richard Bandler and John Grinder were interested in how people became successful in their own field and how other people could then achieve the same outcome. A little like writing a music score for success. A lot of N.L.P. is based on modelling.
Milton Erickson a famous Hypnotherapist, said that he didn’t even know how he did what he did, but their work (Bandler and Grinder) was as close an account of how he did what he did.
There is a famous story of Richard Bandler holding a convention at an hotel. The night before he spoke to somebody at the convention who hadn’t seen him before, asking them what N.L.P. was. The next day probably to the student’s embarrassment he recounted the story, but he wanted to put across the point that if the student knew who he really was, he wouldn’t have been as confident of giving his idea of N.L.P.. N.L.P. Wouldn’t have grown in the process.
It was disappointing years later to hear that Richard Bandler had tried to copyright N.L.P., however he failed in this attempt, as the word N.L.P. was considered to be no different to the word geography and history.
Most of the instructors who taught N.L.P. had a back ground in hypnosis, which meant that I was influenced greatly in hypnosis while learning N.L.P., the reason why I am now a hypnotherapist. I also believe that much of N.L.P. has always been around in one positive thinking field or another, therefore Bandler and Grinder categorised the information in a different way. Hypnotherapy and N.L.P are like the egg and the chicken, which came first. Perhaps you may wish to visit the Hypnosis page on my web site.
