What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we can all access from time to time. We certainly achieve it last thing at night before we go to sleep and first thing in the morning when we awaken. There will also be times throughout the day when we may drop into an hypnotic state.
Have you ever driven down the road a few miles and wondered how you had arrived there. If we had to deal with all the information we processed in a day, then we would get totally overburdened. Therefore the mind tends to withhold information that we don’t require, but would make you very aware if you had to stop at a red light.
Remember learning to walk for the first time or driving a car, it may have been frustrating and stress full at the time, however years later we may go for a walk or a drive in the car to unwind and only deal with the information we need to while going through the process.
Many people have come across stage hypnotist shows, which give a false impression of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Shows depend on the somnambulistic trance, which generally only 5 out of 100 people in the population go into it easily. Therefore the hypnotist has the experience from past shows to decide which people will be his best subjects. When people are in the somnambulistic trance they are unaware of what they are actually doing. Sometimes however stage shows benefit from an individual who wants an audience to perform to and the hypnotist grants that stage.
The problem with people going into a somnambulistic trance easily, is that they are going to be more easily suggested to by other people, on a day by day basis.
I am not very keen on stage shows myself, for the quick advertisement they give to hypnosis, I feel they breed fear and a false impression.
Hypnotherapy isn’t a quick fix solution, it is quick in relation to how long an individual has had the problem. However for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Some people are lucky that one session is enough for them to stop smoking, but they are the minority rather than the rule.
Generally speaking if you stop smoking too quickly, the next time you go through a crisis, it is possible that you may start smoking again. Or it is possible that you may start behaving in another dysfunctional way, such as putting on a lot of weight.
Perhaps you remember a time when you are in the middle of a two week holiday, you have unwound and everything feels blissful. This is how I would describe the state of hypnosis.
While in the state of hypnosis you maybe conscious of things happening around you, but if it was necessary for you to open your eyes for your safety and move, you would immediately do this. Sometimes you will be deep inside yourself oblivious to things that are happening around you. Other times you will be aware of colourful images in your mind.
Sometimes while you are in an hypnotic trance, time can travel very quickly, other times it can travel slow.
Each time you learn to go into a hypnotic trance it becomes better and deeper. It is not like the earth moving, it is a gradual process, as though you were walking down a gentle slope.
Why wait for a two week holiday to feel blissful, why not learn how to access the state of hypnosis on a daily basis. Accessing the state of hypnosis for half an hour a day, could be the equivalent of a few hours sleep, which could then help you to perform better for the remainder of the day.
It is possible to measure the brain wave activity using a special machine. Normal brain wave activity is called Beta, the state of hypnosis is called Alpha. Deeper states are Theta and Delta, which we access when sleeping or dreaming. All states are measured in Hz.
We have all been hypnotised when we are growing up, so when I work with individuals I am really de-hypnotising them. When you are a child, you soak up things very quickly and take on the beliefs of parents and authority figures to survive in that environment. Many beliefs you may have taken on while growing up, are no longer appropriate to you and could in fact be doing you great harm.
To guide somebody into a state of hypnosis, I will probably do:-
A tense and relaxation of body parts.
Show you how to breath properly.
Bring an individual to awareness of all their sense’s around them, hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting and smell.
Awareness through all their body parts.
Guided visualisation.
Suggest a positive outcome to their subconscious mind.
Suggestions made to you while in a deep state of relaxation, are taken on quicker by the subconscious mind.
Problems that you wish to eradicate have been with you for a long time, so deep relaxation and positive suggestion have to be repeated until your mind adopts a new belief.
I provide a CD to create a new belief in somebody in the quickest time possible. Using the CD at home gives the individual the same effect as me being in the room with them and speeds up the process.
Your problem is only the tip of the iceberg, there maybe other factors beneath the surface I will have to work with, to help you achieve your desired belief.
Each time you come to see me, I will slightly modify the session and the CD that accompanies it.
Problems you now have could have been a result of something that happened to you in your child hood, by being relaxed you are able to access memories from your child hood you have forgotten about and re-evaluate them as an adult and move on from them. A little like doing a disk fragmentation on a computer or creating a new filing index and file system, everything just needs to be re-ordered to make life run smoother.
The more that you feel safe in my presence, the deeper you will relax and open up to me about your problems. Your sub conscious mind is a safety mechanism and that is its ultimate priority, it does not like big changes.
If anything should happen to the therapist while you are in the hypnotic trance, you would eventually come out of the trance, as you would if you had gone to sleep or had been day dreaming.
You can’t be made to do anything while in an hypnosis trance that would go against your values, but I would choose very carefully the hypotherapist you wish to help you.
Hypnotherapy could be the treatment that you have been looking for.
