Hypnotherapy Sheffield Questions and Answers?
I have been working with clients now since 2001 and have gained a wealth of experience on the matter. What worries or concerns do you have about Hypnotherapy? Drop me an email and I am more than willing to answer your questions on this matter. I probably had many of these concerns myself, when I first went to see a psychoanalyst and Hypnotherapist nearly 20 years ago.
At the time I asked my sister who was a Nurse, what she thought of Hypnotherapy, her views were very negative and I am glad I chose to ignore her advice. While having Hypnotherapy treatment I was seeing a GP, he didn’t forbid me from seeing a Hypnotherapist, but at the same time he didn’t endorse Hypnotherapy.
Can you be made to do something that you don’t want to do?
All Hypnosis is self hypnosis. I lead and you follow. If you don’t want to follow, then you can choose to come out of the trance. Therefore you can’t be made to do anything in trance, that you wouldn’t want to do outside trance.
How quickly does Hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy takes time and does require some work on your own behalf. Miracles do happen in one session, but more deep rooted sessions can take up to five sessions. I produce a tailor made Hypnotherapy CD, each time you come to see me and the onus is on you to use the recording, daily between sessions.
Will I be able to use Hypnotherapy on the NHS?
From my dealings with the NHS they are very negative to Hypnotherapy, which is strange when the British Medical association, endorsed it many years ago. The NHS seem to be rigidly bound by the NICE guidelines, which endorse Cognitive behavioural therapy. I do understand that a hospital in Manchester were using Hypnotherapy to reduce the Symptoms of IBS, with great success. However when I have talked to the NHS about using Hypnotherapy with their clients, up to now they have been resistant. A few years ago a local Health practice was sign posting certain customers onto me, but that stopped a while ago.
I have also talked to private medical insurance schemes about using Hypnotherapy with their clients and they tend to endorse acupuncture or counselling, but not Hypnotherapy.
How does stage Hypnosis work?
Stage Hypnosis works for a number of reasons. 10% of the audience would probably be willing subjects and the Hypnotist, will have a good idea from body language and previous experience who would be the best subjects. There is a trance called a Somnambulistic trance and people in this state of mind are totally unaware what they are doing and this is only accessed by a small number of people. A number of people are very extrovert, just looking for a situation where they can behave in a silly way. The remaining people are more liable to fear saying “no” and do as the Hypnotist tells them. From that mix of people you have a stage show. There is very little Hypnotherapy in it.
What happened if something happened to the Hypnotherapist while I was in trance?
Hypnotherapy is a state of mind half way between sleeping and being fully conscious, very much like day dreaming. If anything should happen to the Hypnotherapist, you would come out of the trance, very much like waking up out of a day dreaming sleep.
How should a choose an Hypnotherapist or Personal development coach.
The best way of choosing a Hypnotherapist or a coach, is from word of mouth. However I have found out over the years, that people keep their problems to themselves, even after they have been resolved. We tend not to talk about mental issues we may have had, because people in this country aren’t generally very understanding of them. You get much more sympathy if you break a bone or end up in hospital needing an operation. There seems to be a lot of stigma attached to mental health in this country and I don’t think enough consideration is made to this by the health service. Having suffered myself about 20 years ago with high anxiety and panic attacks, I had to pay privately to get the help and service I required. The NHS didn’t appear to know what to do or have mental health very high up their agenda. In fact talking to the NHS about my issue made me feel very uncomfortable and not very likely to open up to them. I am not a great supporter of counselling from my experiences of it in the past. The people I talked to in the NHS seemed more stressed than myself and seemed to be in denial about it.
Hypnotherapy qualifications are only part of the consideration when choosing a Hypnotherapist or Coach, as sometimes the life experiences people have gone through, can be the greatest factor in helping you. There are quite a few different Hypnotherapy certification organisations around. I actually trained as a Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Master Practitioner, which took me two years to gain, the bedrock of my N.L.P training was Hypnotherapy. Since that time I have carried out quite a few other courses, the Journey and Sedona Method two to mention. On top of that I have studied Mind machine technology and Lucid dreaming. I have gradually being growing my business working with clients since 2001. This year I have been requested by the Master Guild of Hypnotist examiners to talk at their annual conference at Scarborough, on the subject of “Mind machines”.
If you ask your doctor to recommend a Hypnotherapist, he is very unlikely to suggest anybody, incase there is any come back on him. I think this is disappointing, because the public and private sectors need to work together. That is not to say that your own doctor maybe more open than most and it maybe worth talking to him about it.
Can I use Hypnotherapy if I am on medication?
One of the problems with being on medication, is that it dulls your senses, so that you are not so in touch with your feelings (my understanding). I am not a great supporter of medication, but if somebody is on it, I suggest that they talk to their doctor about it and gradually come off the medication under his supervision and I am willing to work with them on this understanding. I have been told by many people on medication, that it makes them feel sleepy and in some cases they actually feel worse on it. If you go on medication, at some stage you are going to have to come off it, so you may as well deal with the real issue in the first place, it would be much quicker. I take clients on a per case basis and if I didn’t feel that I could help you, I would say so.
