The most important way to find a Hypnotherapist is through word of mouth. However people don’t usually shout from the roof tops that they have been to see a Hypnotherapist. Many people in this country (England) don’t like to admit they have a problem or had a problem. The Americans are a little more open about things, many broadcasting the fact that they have a therapist or went to see one.
Years ago when I went to see a Psychoanalyst and Hypnotherapist, I found one through the local paper and the other one in the Yellow pages. I had been suffering with panic attacks for a year, before I realised what they were. After seeing my GP for a number of months, my situation wasn’t improving.
The local GP sent me to see a Counsellor, which took about two months to arrange, back in the early 1990′s. I found the counsellor a total waste of time and didn’t go again after the first session. I decided to pay privately and get the more personal service I preferred. I personally find the NHS very clinical and cold and am not a fan of counselling.
I was frightened that I may lose control if I used a Hypnotherapist, but all other options had dried up for me.
Over the years I have talked to both my local Health practice and one a few miles away. The local health practice are totally against what I do. I used to get a few referrals from the health practice a few miles away, but this has since dried up. Even though the British Medical Association said that Hypnotherapy was a good tool for helping with issues, the Health service tend to use Cognitive Behavioural therapists.
I don’t think that you will get much success if you talk to your local GP about him recommending a Hypnotherapist, they don’t like to recommend Hypnotherapists from my dealings with them.
I saw a psychoanalyst for the first number of sessions, however I didn’t feel totally comfortable opening up to her about my feelings, even though it was starting to give me some relief. I stopped going to see the psychoanalyst, but I was still suffering from panic attacks and decided to try a Hypnotherapist.
I had my initial free session and booked into see the Hypnotherapist in a weeks time. The Hypnotherapist lived in a detached house, down a dirt track off the beaten road. I felt comfortable in his presence and that was my major factor for choosing him. It felt a bit like going to see my Grandad and having a nice chat, he would then relax me very deeply and offer positive suggestions into my subconscious mind. After each session I would take a way a tape of the relaxation session I have just had, it was recorded using a Dictaphone.
Previously I had been dependent on seeing the psychoanalyst for relief. Having the tape to take away after each session with the Hypnotherapist, I realised that I was more in control of my own life.
I certainly wouldn’t just advise choosing somebody because they have certain qualifications. I think that you have to look at the bigger picture and whether you feel comfortable with that person. Qualifications are only part of the equation and the story of why they do what they do, may be more important.
I trained as a Master Practitioner of N.L.P., N.L.P stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. N.L.P. originated from the U.S.A. and the two people responsible were Richard Bandler and John Grinder. N.L.P. was modelled on a number of very successful practitioners of therapy. One of them being Milton Erickson, who is probably the most famous Hypnotherapist in the world. A lot of my N.L.P. training involved Trance and Time line therapy.
When I first started practising in 2001, I found out that people didn’t want all the questions, that N.L.P brought up and I decided to go down the path of helping people with Hypnotherapy, which a lot of my training was based on.
I need you to find 30 minutes a day, after seeing me, to get the best out of the service I offer you, otherwise it is possible that I will be unable to help you and will turn down the opportunity. Word of mouth from my own business is important to me and I won’t risk damaging that.
At the end of the day, you will choose the Therapist, most suitable for your needs.
