Dear All

Canadian geese Bakewell

Canadian geese Bakewell.

As well as blogging about my Hypnotherapy Sheffield site, I will also be blogging about other things that interest me. Today I have decided to talk about my understanding of my Hypnotherapy Sheffield web site optimisation and ranking. Before I set up my Hypnotherapy & NLP business in Sheffield, I worked in the Information Technology department of HSBC in Sheffield. Therefore when I left HSBC to setup my Hypnotherapy business, I decided to build my own web site from day one, as my skills base enabled me to do that.

Even though I worked in the Telecom department of HSBC, at one stage we only had one PC in the department that could be connected to the internet and users had to sign in a book when using it. Later certain individuals were given email accounts. Just before I left HSBC, there was a big expansion in their use of the Internet and if I had stayed on, I would have moved into the Internet Department with Telecoms. This was back in 2000.

I am not going to talk about how I built my Hypnotherapy Sheffield web site today, but I will focus on how I am trying to increase the ranking of my Hypnotherapy Sheffield web site.

There are a number of different factors to take into account when trying to optimise your web site for top rankings. It is important to have as many web sites of a similar nature connecting to your web site as possible. Contact other like minded businesses and ask them whether they are willing to exchange web site links with you. Create a Links page on your site and add urls to the link page, with a suitable description. I contacted all of the Hypnotherapy Businesses in Sheffield, but not many of them were willing to exchange links, so I had to go further afield. Hypnotherapy Sheffield is a highly competitive keyword.

Repeating keywords through out your site is important. In my Hypnotherapy Sheffield business, important keywords for me would be: Sheffield, Hypnosis, Hypnotherapist, Hypnotherapy, Hypnotism, Hypnotist, Management, Stress, Weight, Stopping smoking to name a few. The more times that your keywords appear on a page or across a site, the better.

Meta tags used to be important, but less so now as many people abused them. Google looks at the keywords through your site. Google doesn’t like hidden keywords or the same ones appearing in the same place on each page.

It is important to have a good page title and description, as that is what appears in the search engine. This is the title page and description from the home page of my web site.

Title – Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapist NLP Sheffield Worksop Rotherham Nottingham

Description – I am a hypnotherapist based in south Sheffield. I can do one to one sessions, provide off the shelf CD’s for specific outcomes, or conduct personal development courses for your organisation.

I like to blog about things other than Hypnotherapy, but you have to be careful not to dilute the keywords throughout your site too much. However I get quite a few people searching for dancing and the Chesterfield canal, so it is a back door way of advertising my Hypnotherapy business in Sheffield.

It is important to keep exchanging additional web site links with other like minded businesses and improving the content of your web site for your keywords.

I understand that using titles H1 to H6 with your keywords in it, is also important.

Hypnotherapy Sheffield is highly contested in Sheffield. So looking for other keywords that may not be so highly contested, but bring you good traffic to your site is important. There are a number of free tools out there, that will help you to improve the ranking of your web site, so that you can decide what the best keywords are for your site.

My biggest concern is that when I search for information on the web site, that it isn’t that good, because people are creating pages that can be found for their keywords and not for content value.

I am using Article base to add pages from my Hypnotherapy Sheffield blog, to attract more traffic to my Hypnotherapy Sheffield web site.

I tried using google add words, for my keywords: Sheffield Hypnotherapy, Hypnotherapy Sheffield, Hypnotherapist Sheffield, Sheffield Hypnotherapist, Hypnosis Sheffield and Sheffield Hypnosis, but it tended to attract people who didn’t want to put a lot of effort into finding a Hypnotherapist in Sheffield. Whereas people who found a Hypnotherapist in Sheffield, through my organic listing, were more likely to ring me.

I also add a nice picture to each page of my Hypnotherapy Sheffield web site.

Even though it is important to have a good ranking Hypnotherapy web site in Sheffield, it is also important to work on the word of mouth advertisement for your business.

I hope that this blog has been useful and I will have a follow up article, as the ranking of my Hypnotherapy Sheffield web site improves.

Until next time

Think positive

To whom it concerns.

I have now trialled four different content management systems and eventually decided on building my site on Word press.   My old site was hosted on yahoo and used serif software.  I have moved the hosting to Evohosting at Maidstone in Kent and I am really satisfied with the control panel and one click setup of software.  I am also very satisfied with the service I get from Evohosting and their quick response to any issues I may have.

There were a few teething problems getting to this stage, however other than now fine tuning the data on my site, I can now add lots of additional features to my site.

I bought Artisteer last week to do the template design on my site, which makes it a piece of cake and I will be updating my design shortly.

I am going to go out for a nice walk in the country now and tomorrow I will write something about Hypnotherapy or Positive thinking, the main theme of my blog.

Keep positive

Best regards

Hi Everybody

My blog will be about any thing positive thinking, but also anything I feel strong enough to talk about.

My existing web site is on Serif software, but it was limited because the blog was hosted on the Serif host, which meant I wouldn’t have any control over search engines accessing it.

I looked around for a decent blog and the best I came across was Word Press.   At the same time I was looking to update my web site from Serif to a Content Management System.

I loaded Joomla, Drupal and Cms made simple onto my host to trial and found them all difficult to work.  It would have been worth understanding them further if I was part of a big corporate organisation and that was the main part of my job description.

I found out that people were using WordPress to build content management systems and went down that road and am glad I did.   After ironing a few problems in the back ground, I now feel that I can go ahead an build my site.   At some stage I will need to better understand template design, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Because I was only using Word Press as a blog to start with, I loaded it into directory /wordpress, but have had to move it into my root directory now I am using it as Cms as well.

I am sure that WordPress has a lot more capability than I have already discovered and will improve my web site with time.  But now I know where I am going, I feel much happier.

I will go out for a nice walk in the countryside where I live this afternoon and post a blog later today on Positive thinking.   Hopefully I can add a nice picture to my next blog, the wonders of technology.

All the best

Think positive

Hi everybody

I am sorry that it has taken me so long to post since last time, but I have been working heavily behind the scenes on my web presence.   Normally I will be talking about all things personal development, but web presence has been a major concern to me lately, so I will talk about that today and get it off my chest.

Having had a 15 year career in Information technology and having been a Electronics apprentice, I couldn’t think of anybody better to build my web site.   I started off with Microsoft front page and had to upgrade after the software corrupted.  I upgraded to Microsoft publishing which was a back word step.   Last year I purchased Serif X2 (costs £60), which is my current web site www.hypnosis-sheffield.com, hosted on yahoo’s web hosting.

I have found Serif X2 a great package to build my web site on, it has a large amount of functionality and you don’t need to understand the programming level of the software HTML.   However if you understand HTML, you can update the code directly.   The only problem I have found with the software, is that because HTML is created for you, the HTML coding is a lot more complicated than it needs to be.  Also the blog and forum part of the software is hosted on their server, which means it isn’t being read by the search engines and the reason for me creating a word press blog.

I decided that I wanted to host my web site on British soil, because that is where I lived and that I wanted to build an even better web site.   I decided to use British Telecom, but wasn’t that impressed with their hosting package and after a year withdrew from it and changed to Evohosting which I have found to be excellent and they are based in Kent.  It costs me £9 a month to host on Evhosting, which includes a free domain name and e-mail support.  The Evohosting control panel is very easy to use.

I started to use Joomla to build a Content management System web site, but after a year couldn’t figure out the menu system.  I tried Drupla for a day and their system seemed flawed and I couldn’t get any assistance from their forum.  Within a day of loading Content management System made easy, I had copied over my existing site and rebuilt it.

I wouldn’t say that Content management system made simple is that easy.  It is necessary to actually start changing programming lines and I still haven’t been able to create a great template design for my web site, which was much easier on Joomla.  But I think this is the direction I will now be going in and this site will eventually replace my Serif X2 site.

All the Content Management Systems seem to have pro’s and con’s.  I think it is a case of finding one you feel comfortable with and sticking with it.

I personally think it is better to build your own web site, rather than let somebody else build it for a number of reasons.   People seem to charge about £800  to build a very simple site, that cann’t be updated at a later stage.   By building the site yourself, you build your web site exactly the way you want it to be.

Web sites have to be continually evolving.  The more keywords that are specific to your business that appear in your content, the higher you rank in web search engines like google.   It is necessary to link to as many other web sites that are similiar to your business as possible and get them to link back to you.

A lot of people want to build you a web site or optimise it for you.   This can cost you an arm and a leg.   But you cann’t get a web site built or optimised and then leave it, it is something you have to work on all the time and that will cost you a small fortune, if you wanting it doing correctly.

It is a steep learning curve to build your own web site and ensure it is correctly optimised by search engines, but I would advise anybody else to move in this direction.

Hopefully I will be talking about more personal development things next time, but from time to time I will be going back to web presence as I think this is one of the most important area’s in the development of today’s business’s.

Keep positive

Tim
