What has happened to Sheffield’s chance to dance festival?
Sheffield has had a dance festival during June for the last 10 years, where you can sample different area’s of dance, throughout the City Centre. There may have been 10 different exhibitions going off at any one time. A demonstration was carried out and then members of the public were invited to join in. Anything from Sequence dance through to belly dancing. Usually everybody body joined in with a mass Salsa dance at the end.
It was a great way for people to sample the different styles of dancing and a way for all the dance schools in the Sheffield area to promote themselves. It brought Sheffield city centre to life.
I think Sheffield City council were behind the venture and I suspect due to cost cutting have stopped it. If Sheffield City council have pulled the plug on the dance festival, I think it is a short-sighted decision. Dancing is a great way to shed the extra pounds and obesity is becoming a big problem for many in Sheffield. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy yourself, there are that many variations of dancing.
There have been two recent surveys, one by the NHS and the EU, putting obesity at 25% in the UK. We need to deal with the root cause of obesity and dancing will help to some degree.
I started Salsa dancing in 2000, then moved across into Ballroom dancing and also learnt how to Modern jive. I highly recommend dancing as a past time, which ever area you prefer. I find it a great way to exercise, enjoy myself and meet new people. I recommend finding an area of dance that you enjoy and then enrolling at a dance school. Be patient with yourself, as it can take a while to learn how to dance, but is well worth the perseverance and builds your confidence.
I have used the following dance schools in the past. Drapers at Beighton, City Limits at Hilsborough and Karen Byrons school of dance at Thurnscoe. I highly recommend Karen Byrons school, as she did encourage people to change partners when learning to dance. Being single could be a problem at the other schools, if you didn’t have a regular partner.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning Modern Jive at Davy’s sports and Social club in Darnall. The lessons were very good and the whole evening was value for money and the people there are very friendly. It is run by Cerok UK.
There are many other dance schools and venues I haven’t mentioned. But the City Hall in Sheffield have a regular Tea dance on a Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday and there is only one place I have found that is better and that is Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
Scarborough Spa has two ballrooms and a week-long dance festival in November. There are usually three sessions a day over week period. Morning, afternoon and evening dances. You can pay per session, day or week. A weeks pass was about £45. In the morning and afternoon dances, there was an opportunity to learn a new dance under instruction. Each evening there was an exhibition. At the end of the week was an open competition.
The Oasis in Meadowhall hold a tea dance every Monday morning but this is geared more to the more mature person, but they do have a live band that is very good.

Sequence and Ballroom dancing in the Oasis Meadowhall.
Dear All
When I am not working on my Hypnotherapy business, I like to get out dancing.
Over the last 10 years I have gradually learned to sequence, ballroom, salsa and modern Jive.
I have danced at many different venues and decided to try a new dance venue at Meadowhall Oasis.
The dance is every Monday morning during term time, from 10am until 12pm. I am not sure what the program will be for Christmas time.
I understand that Debenhams sponsor the event. It doesn’t cost anything to have a go, but there is usually a raffle and the money raised goes to Sheffield Childrens Hospital.
It was really nice to see a live band there and if anybody reading this knows their name, please let me know so that I can update the blog. If you can provide me with any further information to update this blog, please drop me an email at timawells@btinternet.com.
You can buy food all around the Oasis. I paid £1 for a decent size coffee and was told later, that if I went to this other counter, as long as I kept my cup, it would be refilled and it would cost me a £1.
During the morning there was a variety of different sequence and ballroom dances, the band were great and played to a nice tempo. Two hours dancing in a nice venue with friendly people, is well worth a visit and it was also nice to see a younger couple at the event for a change. What better way to keep fit, enjoy yourself and meet new people.
Until next time keep positive.
Best regards

Can Hypnotherapy help with becoming a better dancer?
Dear All
When I am not working on my Hypnotherapy business, I find dancing a great way to meet new people, exercise and enjoy myself at the same time. Many years ago I can remember watching dancing from Blackpool Tower ballroom on a Friday night. Years later I walked through the tower ballroom on the way to the top of the Tower, but never expected myself to be dancing in the ballroom years later.
When I first tried ballroom dancing 20 years ago, I didn’t enjoy it at all. At this time I was also going through a very stressful part of my life and gave it up after the initial lessons.
10 years later it was suggested to me that I start Salsa dancing in Sheffield. I found it extremely difficult to start with, but in the end I had more success than I had while trying to ballroom dance previously. In the end I started to have private ballroom dancing lessons at Drapers and started Salsa dancing in Dinnington, where I met a girl who partnered me at Ballroom dancing.
As my ballroom dancing skills improved, I started to dance in Sheffield City Hall, Blackpool Tower ballroom etc.
The problem I find with the ballroom dancing world, is that you are more dependent on a partner than you are, if you Salsa dance or do Modern Jive. I think ballroom dancing classes would be much better, if they were taught in the same way that Salsa or Modern Jive dancing is. With Salsa dancing, you learn part of the move, then move onto the next partner, which makes you much more able to dance with other people in a social situation. From my experiences with ballroom dancing, you aren’t that well catered for if you are a single person.
I watched the first series of Strictly come dancing, but can’t bear to watch it any more. I think it is much more fun getting out there and dancing, than watching other people on the TV. I also find the program too commercial and not a patch on the old Friday night program from the Tower Ballroom.
In order to get where I have with my ballroom dancing over the last 10 years, I have been to a number of different dance schools: Drapers, City Limits and Karen Byrons school of dancing. If I was going to recommend a dance school, it would have to be Karen Byrons school, as she gets you to dance with other people, while learning.
I have also been to quite a few different salsa and modern jive classes, which has made me more relaxed when dancing and loosens my style.
How would I use Hypnotherapy to help you become a better dancer?
With the struggles I have gone through over the last 10 years to get where I have with ballroom dancing, being an Hypnotherapist also puts me in a good position to help you improve your dancing.
I personally think it is easier for a lady to learn to dance than a gentlemen, because she is the one being lead. But sometimes the ladies steps can be more complicated than the mans and it can be difficult to sit back and let somebody else lead you. The other factor in the ladies favour, is that she probably had tap or ballet lessons when she was younger. Whereas most gentlemen didn’t dance in their childhoods.
The key to becoming a good dance, is to stay in a relaxed state of mind, so that you feel as though you have more time.
To start with I would find out about your perceptions of dancing and how you experience it. This would probably take me about 20 minutes. I would then relax you very deeply and guide you through a number of visualisation exercises. Once you are in a very relaxed state of mind I am then going to suggest a positive outcome into your subconscious mind.
Each Hypnotherapy session I carry out, is recorded straight onto a CD for you to take away. The onus is on you to find time daily to listen to the Hypnotherapy recording, the more that you listen to the recording, the more you will believe that you are a good dancer. You couldn’t expect to be a good dancer, without practising between lessons and the same applies with Hypnotherapy. The Hypnotherapy recording gradually conditions your subconscious mind, so that you learn new dance moves more easily and feel that you have more time while dancing.
You will learn to breath properly while dancing, which will keep you in a focused state of mind. A positive side effect of listening to the Hypnotherapy recording, will be that you carry this relaxed feeling into other area’s of your life.
As you become a more relaxed person, any issues from your past, that are laying dormant in your subconscious mind will be released and you will come to terms with these as an older more experienced person, putting these issues to sleep.
Please try a free Hypnotherapy mp3 download recording on the home page of my web site www.hypnosis-sheffield.com. In the future I will be adding a Hypnotherapy download to improve your dancing, but in the meantime, if I can assist you with a tailor made Hypnotherapy recording to improved you dancing, please contact me. I can work over Skype or the telephone for people who do not live in my immediate area, doing the consultation over the telephone and then sending you a tailor made download remotely over the Internet.
Until next time think positive

Female Ballroom dance partner required in South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire.
To whom it concerns
When I am not working on my Hypnotherapy business, I like to Ballroom dance. I have been Ballroom dancing since 2000, on top of that I was quite proficient at Salsa and Modern Jive.
One of the problems I have struggled with over this time, is having a regular partner my own age. Even though “Strictly come dancing” has been around on BBC for quite some time, it isn’t bringing the younger people out into the dance venues, as much as I would have imagined. The younger people are tending to have the lessons, but not progressing socially into the larger dance venues. Single people are put off from dancing, because it can be hard work whether you are a male or female without a regular dance partner and singles aren’t accommodated very well in the Ballroom dancing world.
I have ballroom danced in quite a few venues around the country, to name a few Blackpool Tower ballroom, Sheffield City Hall and Scarborough Spa. I have had lessons at Drapers, Karen Byrons & City Limits previously.
At the moment I am just starting in a beginners ballroom class at the Sutton In Ashfield Regency, to be with people my own age. I have no problem dancing with ladies older than me, but I prefer this to be an exception rather than a rule.
I am 5’10″ and 11 stone. I am looking for a female dance partner who is at least 5’6″ and of slim build. Even if you are only a beginner at Ballroom dancing, that isn’t a problem, as long as you want to attain a higher standard in the future. I would prefer somebody who is in their 40′s, as I am 46. I Ballroom dance, to keep fit, enjoy myself and to meet new people. I have no interest in competition dancing.
It would be preferable if you are a single lady, because it may cause problems with your partner, if you wanted to dance at venues around the country. I am looking for a dance partner who wants to social dance in Blackpool Tower, Sheffield City Ballroom, Scarborough Spa or any other decent venues there maybe.
Please drop me an email via timawells@btinternet.com if you would like to discuss the matter further.

There is a good mix of both Ballroom and Sequence dances, in alternate pairs with a short break between to catch your breath. Foxtrot, quickstep, Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Tango, Samba. 50% of the dances are sequence, so the variety is complete and never the same.
Just before the interval things warm up a little, however for the more ambitious dancer there is a chance to really stretch your legs and show what you can do in the interval, with further recorded music. While the rest of us catch our breaths. An assortment of drinks and food can be purchased all afternoon from the bar area.
Most people eagerly await the Mayfair quick step after the interval and usually the floor is well used.
Whether you want to dance or just admire the other dancers, what better venue could you find in the North of England to wind back time. Dancing seems to have even caught the eye of the younger generation, with “Strictly Come Dancing”. There are still quite a few characters in the Sheffield City Hall, but it isn’t quite so Strictly, because people come to enjoy themselves as well as impress.
The dance is very well attended on a Saturday afternoon, but it would be nicer to see a few younger people attending, as I would like the chance to dance also with a few young ladies who are more my age. If there are any ladies out there in there middle 40′s please let me know! But it would also be nice to see even younger people there as well.
